My first job in industry I had a Manager called Bob. I remember my first day on joining his Department. He walked across the company site for fifteen minutes in drizzling rain to greet me. This he did, with a firm handshake and a warm smile. Walking back to the office I recall this is what he said to me: Andy, I am so pleased you have chosen to join us. I believe that you have something significant to offer our Team. Not only technically but relationally too. You’ll soon appreciate what I mean. And, there are a few things that are important for you to know. The most important is that patient safety (I worked in clinical development of new medicines) is paramount. We don’t put our patients at risk. We keep them safe, we care for them. Second, if you spend any money, even a penny, I need to know. If you voice that you are going to do something then you do it. You may think the office is a quiet place, but it isn’t. And, I expect to hear your voice. If you have a creative, an innovative idea I’d love to hear what it is. Last have fun. Now, we have arrived. Again, Welcome. I felt significant. I was inspired. These words were said to me a long time ago, but I remember them. These words and the man who delivered them shaped how I did my work. What was said guided me on knowing what was important. And, what I needed to do to be successful. They still do.

I’m curious, what words and from whom, have inspired you? Do your words inspire others as Bob’s words did for me?
